Tips for Taking a Sabbatical

  • Go to http://new.ipfw.edu/offices/oaa/promotion/sabbatical-leave.html.  Read through the Application for Sabbatical Leave, Sabbatical Guidelines for IPFW Faculty, the IPFW Sabbatical Policy, and the Sabbatical Report Form.  Do not wait until you apply for a sabbatical to read through all of these documents.

  • Talk to your chair/dean or director, and make sure you have a system for covering your courses and other responsibilities while you are gone.

  • Review your department/division criteria for granting sabbatical leaves, and attach it to your sabbatical application when you submit it.

  • Treat your application for sabbatical leave like you would treat an application for an IPFW or PRF Summer Faculty Grant through the Office of Research, Engagement, and Sponsored Programs.  The sabbatical application bears a striking similarity to these other grant applications.

  • Follow the instructions.  There seems to be a sense that sabbatical applications have become more competitive, and you do not want to have your application rejected because you did not color within the lines.

  • Look to supplement your sabbatical with another grant.  Set up a profile at fundingopps.cos.com with keywords and have new grant announcements in your area of expertise automatically emailed to you.

  • Consider all of the ways you can take a sabbatical.  Most people wait seven years and take a semester-long sabbatical at full pay, but you also can take a two semester sabbatical at half pay.   Additionally, you can take a half-sabbatical four years after your first sabbatical: one semester at half-pay, or two semesters at one-quarter pay.

  • Consider leaving Fort Wayne and the area temporarily.  Go to http://www.padmapper.com to see what housing options exist elsewhere.

  • Anticipate the stress of being on sabbatical, and set realistic goals.   Know what happens to your productivity when you don't have a semester teaching and work schedule.  Think daily word count, not just hours in front of a computer.

  • Remember to come back.  You are obligated to return to IPFW and work for at least a year after taking each sabbatical leave.
